PULA >> ROVINJ>>POREC >> VENICE, now back in Croatia....anchored in Soline Bay. (for images of Rovinj and Porec clic on 'photos' page)...... Pula is the administrative and economic centre of Istria, also a university town. Therefore a busy place. The spectacular Roman amphitheatre is one of the 6 largest existing today....we spent one afternoon exploring, but that was enough for us! The anchorage was shallow, great holding in green yucky water. At the entrance to Pula, there are ruins and bunkers everywhere, evidence from the past unsettled times. Rather eerie, we found On leaving Pula, we sailed by the lovely Brijuni Islands, now a National Park. (interdit to anchor off!) In the past it was the Summer residence of the late President Tito..... YES, WE ARE FINALLY HERE IN THE UNIQUE AND AMAZING CITY OF VENICE....what a privilege & so very exciting to arrive with one's own boat, as you can imagine! Venice is magical, as most of you know...even though, we visited in sweltering summer conditions, with millions of other tourists from all around the world.... we were awed by the endless splendid sights.....walked and walked, used the practical vaporettos to travel from one quartier to another, very convenient. BRUNO had to wait until he turned 70 to visit Venice for the first time ....In my past life, I have been here twice...but for both of us, such a thrill to arrive with 'Pacific Pearl', possibly a 'once in a life time' occasion! We had a very rapid, rollicking passage across from Porec, averaging 8.5 knots ... not bad for us! Anchored our first night outside the Lido entrance, behind the breakwaters for protection, in 3.5 metres of sticky mud. Next morning, we successfully managed to locate our Marina on the island of Certosa...Vento di Venezia....such a peaceful spot on the lagoon, a nature park with lots of trees, singing birds, just a small hotel/resto/bar..from where we were able to hop on and off the passing vaporettos. Perfect position, plus they have finger pontoons, making life easier. So fascinating to see the huge cruise liners leaving and arriving, must be several ,every day of the year....and even more incredible to find these 'monsters' actually right inside Venice...so much happening non-stop in the canals, what with the speeding taxis, flashing ambulances, police, tugboats, rubbish collectors, private 'gin palace' yachts, smaller sailing boats etc. etc. Not forgetting the endless passages of vaperottos..definitely does not seem to be any 'right of way' system! Then the gondoliers, trying to manoeuvre amongst them all....and doing an amazing job! What skills these guys have.... DAZZLING SUNSET FOR OUR LAST NIGHT IN VENICE...FOLLOWED BY THE MOST GORGEOUS FULL MOON....PERFECT NIGHT ENDING OUR UNFORGETTABLE SEJOUR!
Decided to haul out, clean & antifoul at this friendly efficient boat yard in Cres, very convenient as just 100 metres from the busy village, but here in the yard, it is nice & calm at this time of the year. However, obviously very very hot! We have installed all our sun awnings..& have refreshing showers as we wish! A GO GO!! We were given a very acceptable quote for 3 days on the hard, lifting in & out, high pressure washing, taxes included.... so we decided immediately, & were lifted the next morning...100 tonne travel lift. Showers and toilets very acceptable, as there is also a quay, a 'mini" marina belonging to the yard...very protected. |
