According to Homer, ITHACA is the island home of ODYSSEUS.
Like Ithaca, CEPHALONIA, is rugged and steep to, with Mt Nero at 1600 metres, the highest in the Ionian islands. Cephalonia is also the largest of the island group, covered in beautiful pine forests running down into the shimmering deep blue seas.
'Captain Corelli's Mandolin', a 2nd World War history tale, written by Louis de Bernières is centered around this island...a must read!
In ancient times, Cephalonia formed part of the kingdom of Odysseus and archaelogists have been able to find evidence of the ancient sites, as there exist here in SAMI, where we are spending a few days. Very attractive position with the green wooded slopes directly behind....lots of walking possibilities.
Tragically, in 1953, a major earthquake demolished every town on the island, except FISKARDHO, where lovely 19th century buildings still exist, restored and repainted in delicate pastel colours. See photos 'blogs' 2011.
The village is therefore very attirant for the visitor, and the port is packed every night from May until end October. Obviously 'tourist prices' are used!! We won't visit again this time round, other interesting sites on our route. ...
