PALERMO, SICILY .....a 4 hour bus trip from Ragusa. In just 24 hours, we explored this amazing city, full of architectural gems and cultural treasures! Well known worldwide of course, due to the past Mafia influence ('The Godfather').
Fortunately we experienced gorgeous mild weather, so Bruno and I walked and walked the interesting narrow streets, discovering surprises around each corner....... extraordinary Churches and Oratories (The main Cathedrale is a definite MUST!) outstanding Statues (we enjoyed in particular the nude statues at Piazza E Fontana Pretoria). Typical colourful markets (eg...dela Vucciria & de Capo), Palaces (Palazzo Reale di Palermo, also called Palazzo dei Normanni home to the incredible Cappela Palatina/ Palatine Chapel) Piazzas, Gardens, surprisingly many many Teatros (we were staying just near the beautiful Teatro Massimo)....all so so old!
As for the many Museums, I am afraid we just did not have the time....next visit!
Unfortunately, certain areas of the centre are rather scruffy, pity, but that is from our point of view of course!
I found a very 'special' B&B called 'L'OLIVELLA' (www.olivellabb.it) very central, where Elena, a delightful charming young lady, welcomed us warmly and prepared a delicious homemade petit dejeuner....such a choice ....yummy!! Difficult to resist!
Not forgetting the best ever chocolat gelata we enjoyed late at night admiring the magnificent Teatro Massimo.....
SO MANY SCRUMPTIOUS GOODIES FOR BREAKFAST ...mostly homemade! MERCI ELENA.....
THE FAMOUS NUDE STATUES AT THE PIAZZA PRETORIA.....SO SO BEAUTIFUL....
DETAIL OF THE STATUES AT PORTO NUOVA, just near the PALAZZO REALO
LA CATHEDRALE .... PALERMO (just a tiny section, as so so huge )
