Last week, we shared a small hire car with friends obtaining a great deal before the high season. Bruno and I headed off over to the north western side of Crete....stayed overnight in the interesting old town of Chania, Venetian port etc.
En route, we visited the ruins of the ancient city of Knossos, not far from Heraklion...a very cold day, but the sun was shining fortunately. A spectacular day's driving to Chania along the north coast, passing thru Rethimnon, then seeing the rugged snowclad high mountains not far in the distance.
Wind blown silvery olive groves EVERYWHERE, looking so gorgeous surrounded by a green carpet of yellow flowering clovers ....bit too early in the season for poppies, but we did see a few. Also many white and yellow daisies, plus of course the wattle...yes, all along the route!
We then headed to the south coast visiting the 'hippie' village of Matala, where we had a puncture! Pity, as the weather deteriated in the afternoon, so we did not visit the Lassithi Plateau as planned...another time...but we did see a lot of the countryside.
With our friends, Simon and Lorna, we also toured around the east side of Crete....Elounda/Plaka area, Sitia and Ierapetra etc...so all in all, covered many kilometres of the island.
Not forgetting a big stock up at Lidl and Carrefour...in preparation for our leaving...very soon!
