ONE OF THE IMPOSING BYZANTINE CHURCHES IN VOLOS ...... The harbour is very busy, being one of the most important commercial harbours in Greece , also with cruise ships, ferries, fast catamarans etc. From our point of view, VOLOS is not particularly pretty. However, there is such a rich local history and a wealth of cultural heritage... Enjoying an important naval tradition, the symbol of the city is ARGO , the mythical ship that took Jason and the Argonauts to Colchis. MOUNT PELION (where the legendary Centaurs lived) hovers just behind ....spectacular, rising to 1471 mts, covered with snow during Winter with a busy ski resort. There are actually 24 traditional picturesque villages, each with a unique architectural profile, situated between the beautiful beaches and the snowy peaks of Mount Pelion....to visit if we stay longer! We are slowly finding solutions to our technical problems, but in the meantime, we are enjoying watching the world go by, from our boat. (quite a change from our summer anchorages!) The promenade and cafes are teeming at night with the huge young population... Volos being a university town, also families of all ages enjoying the end of August full moon. |
