Decided to visit the east coast of Sicily by car, an old Fiat Panda.... From Marina di Ragusa, we headed slowly along the coast to POZZALLO, from where a huge fast ferry catamaran leaves everyday for MALTA (unless the conditions are too dramatic, which can happen often during the Winter!) On the south east corner of Sicily we visited PORTO PALO di Capo Passero, a possible anchorage if necessary ... mainly for the big fishing trawlers, but ..well protected. Driving north, the next stop was at the picturesque fishing village of MARZAMENI, which has many ancient stone buildings, a reminder of the past important tuna productions (Tonnara), no longer in activity. Surprising to see SO many mimosa trees at the end of their brilliant flowering..(Australian wattle) However, the piazza of Marzameni is imposing and in the hectic summer months, the ambiance of the busy restaurants and bars add to the magical ambiance. | Next .. the baroque town of NOTO , an important wine centre with the huge (as they mostly are!) Cathedral dominating the piazza and monumental city centre. Unfortunately, we did not take the time to visit the VENDICARI Wetlands Nature Reserve (similar maybe to the Camargue region in France, only a much smaller area). SIRACUSE is a magnificent city ...we feel so comfortable here, after having anchored off in the bay last Autumn ( see blog and photos Oct 2012) The island of ORTIGA is the oldest part, beautifully restored, again remarkable baroque style and architecture. This time we visited the NEAPOLIS ARCHEOLOGICAL PARK ... already far too many tourists for us..... The speciality of SYRACUSA....'spaghetti alla Siracusana' (with swordfish, oysters, tunny and pink schrimps) |
